A television adaptation of the memories of one of the first important Czech actors, Jindřich Mošna, about his difficult theatrical beginnings. At that time, as a kandrdas – i.e. a beginner – he asked the director for a so-called benefit, which was a performance that belonged to an important actor and whose proceeds were to belong to him. The director agreed, but stipulated that he would take almost all of the fee. Mošna chose The Bell Ringer at the Mother of God as the performance.

This is a story about the inhabitants of a block of flats standing alone on the outskirts of an industrial city. Unemployment, lack of prospects, and powerlessness create a special aura in which events unfold. The main character, 25-year-old Goździk, has lived here since he was born. He does not work or study.

Zofia and Ania are two senior ladies, each quite a character. They have already put the years of madness behind them – or maybe not? They have not seen each other for half a century. Each followed her own path. One of them finds herself in a situation that creates a new scenario for both. She would like to tear it apart and discard it, but maybe she should grapple with it and go on a journey, one of a kind? The unfortunate 1930s also befell the student Standa Půlpán. For existential reasons, he had to abandon his studies and entered the mines. However, he only slowly and with difficulty became close to the older miners, rough men who were closed in on themselves. Only his brave stand in rescuing people who were trapped in a mining accident will win him the solidarity of the entire mining collective. Even Karel Čapek's draft once lent itself to promoting an exacerbated class interpretation of social relations.

The film responds to the housing shortage that young couples in particular have had to deal with. This problem is also addressed by the couple Slávka and Olda. The girl gets a sublet on Hradčanské náměstí, in the large flat of the widowed pensioner Benda. Benda lived almost his whole life there, and is bound to the apartment by a thousand memories and feelings. The strange and sickly old man has to overcome his crankiness and distrust of people before he fully accepts his lodger and her husband "as his own"...
